West Fork Meadows, Big Sky, Montana
The South Fork of the West Fork Gallatin flows through West Fork Meadows, located on 640 acres near Meadow Village at Big Sky. The landscape is interspersed with pristine alpine wetlands and ephemeral drainages. Road construction in the preliminary stages of the development impacted the South Fork floodplain. The Army Corps permit modification and Corrective Action Plan submitted by VES proposed to restore the riparian buffer by stabilizing the banks with rock barbs and willow cuttings. The mitigation plan outlined the construction and revegetation designs for the creation of five wetlands located in the floodplain of the river channel, an ephemeral drainage, and a slope above the river. The restoration goals and permit conditions were satisfied after three years of monitoring, aided by exceptional salvaged plant materials, abundant water, and a productive relationship between the client, agency, and consultant. The existing and mitigation wetlands were protected for perpetuity with a Covenant of Dedication.
