Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort, Big Sky, Montana
Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort owned by Boyne USA is a recreational paradise situated at the base of Lone Mountain in Gallatin Canyon. Boyne USA submitted an updated Overall Development Plan (ODP) to Madison County in 1999 to improve the residential, commercial, and hotel real estate opportunities and visitor experience. Ms. Vaughn drafted the baseline Environmental Assessment for the ODP using Montana Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) guidelines. The assessment encompassed an extensive terrestrial and aquatic resource evaluation and wetland delineation on 650 acres within the base area. In 2003, VES compiled a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) for the US Army Corps to address issues associated with the initial 404 permits. The CAP required restoration of three tributaries to the Middle Fork West Fork Gallatin, creation of two depression wetlands, and completion of a conservation easement protecting the existing and mitigation wetlands.
Ms. Vaughn compiled the construction and revegetation designs and provided construction oversight for the mitigation projects. The aesthetic impact and structural diversity of the restored sites was enhanced by using native willow cuttings and wetland sod salvaged onsite. Detailed monitoring reports submitted over five years have documented the growth and complexity of the vegetation cover and stability of the rehabilitated stream channels.
